About

The Information Technology Revolution in Karnataka began with the establishment of the Multinational Company viz., Texas Instruments in 1984. Information Technology activity in Karnataka is largely concentrated in Bengaluru. In recent years, other parts of Karnataka have also seen a growth in IT-related activities. The developing cities of Mangaluru, Mysuru, Belagavi and Hubballi - Dharwad are also emerging as attractive destinations for Information Technology / Information Technology enabled Services (ITeS), Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO), ESDM, AVGC and Telecom services.

The Department has created K-Tech Innovation Hubs across the State, including the Centres of Excellence. This ecosystem spans across 58 institutions in 24 Districts across the State. K-Tech Innovation Hubs, powered by IKP, exist in Belagavi, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Shimoga and Bengaluru (Jalahalli Metro Station). K-Tech Technology Business Incubators (TBIs) are operational in 5 locations across the State. K-Tech New Age Innovation Network (NAIN) exists in 24 districts. Over 1.25 lakh square feet (sq. ft.) of Incubation Space has been created in collaboration with Industry Associations and Academia across the State. We have set up VLSI Incubation Centre and Brownfield Cluster at Hubli (which is a Tier -2 city) in partnership with IESA ( industry association) and Academic institutions. We are also coming up with Advanced test Facility in Mysore under the EMC scheme of GOI.

Agenda

We have already established incubation-cum-common instrumentation facility in Mysuru and Dharwad in the areas of Nutraceuticals & Phytopharmaceuticals and Bio-Agri respectively to nurture and promote entrepreneurship in these cities. Our programmes are like Elevate Idea2PoC, New Age Incubation Network (NAIN) and Biotechnology Skill Enhancement Programs (BiSEP) are targeted to ensure these cities become innovation hubs.

The new IT Policy 2020-25 will enable a distributed IT/ITeS model that facilitates growth through industrial development and employment generation Beyond Bengaluru (outside Zone 3 as per the prevailing Karnataka Industrial Policy). There is a need to create a new model on how we can leverage the Tier 2 /Tier 3 cities and encourage startups/new business to come up in Tier2/Tier 3 towns. We need to look at data business that can be replicated in smaller towns. Government has announced several incentives for the startups/IT companies to set up operations in Tier-2 cities.
